Alright, just got back from the opening leg of Moogfest. I mostly walked around and grabbed info and checked into the few things that were going already. I met up with Whitney Webb and we went to the McRory protest to see Vermin Supreme speak. We got to meet him and I took their picture! Then I went over to the opening panel (in which McRory had originally been scheduled to speak). What I caught of it was heartening about the future of NC. The one thing that really got to me though is how they kept talking about how there are no Engineers or Software Designers in the region. Apparently Moog thought they had to bring people in from California because there arent any software designers were aware of in Western North Carolina. Coming from someone who spends all of his time with local Software Designers and Engineers who have never been able to find work here within their field, that just isnt true. I think I need to go have a chat with Moog in the near future as its apparent that they arent even aware that we have a MAKE group in Asheville, otherwise they might have helped welcome us rather than bringing in Makers from outside the region to convince us we need a MAKE group here. (Lack of communication much?) So at some point soon, I need to figure out how to get Moog and Asheville to recognize that we have an insane number of STEM folks here who are the very talent that they keep saying they need to figure out how to attract to Asheville. If theyd stop making it so difficult to be poor here theyd realize that half of those bums and street kids they keep trying to scare off ARE the local talent.
