Alright, so I know I’m late to the game, but I wanted to think - TopicsExpress

Alright, so I know I’m late to the game, but I wanted to think about this before saying something. UCLA is a dream come true for me, and sometimes I wonder if I should be here; not because I don’t deserve it, but because girls like me, well, we typically don’t go to schools like this. I’d hazard a guess that most girls like me don’t go to college at all. This is me living Cinderella’s dream, and while I’ll still get my happy ending, my singing mice--the bonfire--were robbed from me, so that other girls like me could have it. I’m disappointed about that. Every dreamer, every great mind, and every mover and shaker should have the ability to accomplish those dreams here at UCLA or elsewhere, but I’m still sad about my little mice. For some, it’s just a fire, but not for others and not for me. I want to have and savor every moment of my perfect and wonderful time here. I understand the disappointment, and I understand the anger. I thought about why I disagreed with the protesters’ methods, and I realized that two goals were getting completely mixed up. One goal is to protest at some target audience, namely, the perpetrators of whatever problem. Another goal is spreading awareness to other potential victims or to people that can help the cause. Somehow, the goal of protesting, rather than spreading awareness, was targeted at the incorrect audience. In a letter from my assemblywoman, Melissa Melendez, I was told this tuition hike is part of an even bigger problem. From a 2012, voter-approved education tax meant to keep college affordable and protect everyone’s ability to attend college, only a fraction was given to schools. Consequently, we need four groups of people to, I think, seriously tackle this issue. We need two groups spreading awareness: one to the students and one to potentially interested outside parties; and we need two groups to address or engage those in power: one at the state level and one at the school level. If you have any interest in being part of any of those groups, contact me and let’s start figuring out solutions. I am already in contact with my assemblywoman. We can strike at this issue both at the school and state levels strategically and effectively. We can make a difference, and we should try, because every dreamer, every great mind, and every mover and shaker should have the ability to accomplish those dreams here at UCLA. Aaaand, Im done. :)
