Alrighty folks. Im all signed up for the Marathon this month! Its literally twice as much as Ive ever run in one stretch and Im glad my legs still listen to me. Sharini and I feel that running, long distance running in particular, is such a powerful metaphor for the human experience. Would you mind me indulging myself with why for just a moment? If so read on... We are so often inclined to rush through life, in some frenzied effort to get somewhere or be somebody...only to find ourselves weary and out of breath in the morning of our lives. Some of us feel overwhelmed at the prospect of starting at all, fearful of the potential for pain and hardship along a path filled with corners and no guarantee of a happy ending. Unbelieving of our capability, we often magnify our tragedies and dishonor our many victories. Yet through each generation, do we not see the merits of self-belief and perseverance? Of envisioning and choosing a life as opposed to following an imposed template. For in the longer run (pun intended), regardless of our time here, is it not the spirit with which we participate in life that matters the most? Each conscious step being a bold embracement of a yearning to move forward. An audacity to face what is around each corner, be it tests of hardship or euphoric bliss.Moving at a pace that is distinctly in tune with our own rhythm. And is it not poignant that our finish lines are often loops, a return to where we began our journey. And in saying all this, I give thought to my brothers and sisters in Kapita. A wonderful collective of people in Malawi that you have heard me talk about since 2010. It has been a deep privilege to be a part of their journey through these years. To observe the tenacity of men, women and children to shift beyond unjust inequities in circumstance. Through doubt, through conflict and disagreement, through discrimination, apathy and victimhood... to nurture a flame of hope that is truly their own. Their spirit spirit in this endeavour has been a deep source of learning and inspiration for me. These are but a few of the things I think about when running. When my feet move me forward and my mind alternates between a contemplative calm and the lures of doubt....between them, a ceaseless river of choice. Thanks for reading :) If youd like to support Sharini and myself as we take on this challenge, you can do so via the link below.
