Although I understand that hijab is obligatory (hold that in mind). And with what I am about to write, I dont want to undermine this fact in any way. I would also like to note that this is not as widespread as it may seem. So this does not apply to the majority. But its worth a mention. I have noticed that there is a false dichotomy that has been created of hijabi vs non-hijabi and is being upheld, each with its own stereotype. And its not only being upheld by the hijabi women, but those who judge those who are outwardly religious or look religious thinking that theyre judgemental. This can lead to those who dont wear the hijab to feel alienated from attending/participating events, gatherings and even the mosques- in fear of being judged. Furthermore it can hinder a united sisterhood as well as collaborative participation for good causes among ALL Muslim women, hijabi or not. There are those not so practicing who want to become more involved in religious activism, but the outwardly religious put them off with their character and the condescending way they interact with them. And there are those who are outwardly religious and want to mix and socialise with others of different backgrounds, but they are judged for looking religious. Thinking that shes stern, and judgemental herself. (the irony) I just wanted to mention there are many positive ways to encourage more and more women to get involved in the deen AND encourage a more united sisterhood AND find their belonging in the the good company of the Muslim community- but this dichotomy is not one of them. Be careful when using labels. It is more dis-empowering rather than empowering. Ive been wearing the hijab for only 2 years now. I have been judged by both sides. And its ridiculous because I thought we were homies. We can be our own worst enemy at times. Note: I had to re-write this so many times because I was including many false dichotomies and stereotypes in my language e.g. liberal vs conservative, practicing vs non practicing. Shows how much I have been conditioned to believe these false notions. Wow at how psychological conditioning can affect us subconsciously. Its serious business.
