Although this article is about freelancers, it could just as easily be about consultants, contractors, temps, portfolio careerists, etc. In fact, Shawn may be including them without stating it as such. They are all part of what some people are calling the gig economy and others the free agent economy. There are probably other names, too. The point is: there is a great deal of work available for those willing to get out of the full-time job comfort box. This is likely to be true for the future, as well. Shane explains how this can work both for the benefit of the worker and the company. His own focus is on journalists and editors as the COO of contently.
