Alumna Johanna Schwaiger working in her studio in Salzburg, Austria. The life size figure is inspired by the age old art of Capoeira. Johanna said: Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music and is deep rooted in the wish for freedom. During the 15th century, thousands of Africans and Portuguese were sent to Brazil as slaves. While being tortured and under extremely tough working conditions the African decedents kept their culture in dance and music and gradually started to develop a defense technique disguised as a dance gathering. It became a powerful martial art form known today as capoeira. The idea of the sculpture is to express the energy of this inner dignity and freedom no one can ever take away from anyone.
