Always wondered about this problematic scene myself. In fairness, she did in fact exhort him to climb aboard - he may have protested solely on the likelihood of the planks not having enough buoyancy for the both of them. I did feel they should have explored the possibility more assiduously, given that the option depicted at the right column, middle row would not only have saved him, but would also have increased her chances even more than being the sole rider on the panel, since one would have contributed to the others core temp. Ah, well - she did rebound readily enough, no...?
