Alyn and I enjoyed an absolute belter of a winter mountaineering - TopicsExpress

Alyn and I enjoyed an absolute belter of a winter mountaineering outing in Glen Coe today with an ascent of the superb Sron na Lairig ridge from the Lairig Eilde, up onto Stob Coire Sgreamhach (one of the Bidean nam Bian Munros) then a descent down the Beinn Fhada ridge. Both get a winter grade I/II. All types of snow conditions encountered, from the hard and icey to the deep and soft, with some nice wee icey rocky steps thrown in for good measure. No summit views due to wispy cloud. Very quiet, only met three other people all day. The Beinn Fhada (Long Mountain) ridge lived up to its name with its many ups and downs, especially as this was our first outing of the season carrying heavy winter climbing packs containing rope, harness and gear. We only used the rope for one wee exposed section, seeing as we were carrying it anyway!! The breaking effectiveness of ma new winter tyres were put to the test as we arrived in Glen Coe. I was driving whilst simultaneously admiring the Buachaille (as you do!) when Alyn, with a certain sense of urgency in his voice alerted me to the fact that three big brick wall sized Red Deer stags had decided to cross the road just ahead of us. If this had happened last week I would have been eating Venison for a fortnight!! Another month before winter begins, Joaks a happy man. Slaint Mhath!!
