Am stunned. My surgeon just called, the pathology reports show that there are still not clear margins, which means there is more cancer in my right breast. Since I just went through back to back surgeries, I will be resting and healing for the next two months, enjoy the holidays and return for a mastectomy in early January. For those who wonder why I havent had a double mastectomy, I was told nearly 4 years ago at Dana-Farber (for left breast cancer), and again by my surgeon at Mayo, that having a bi-lateral mastectomy would not change/alter my survival prognosis. If they removed my breasts, it would not prevent my cancer from returning. It would come back, and if the breast tissue was absent it would just be a matter of where the cancer would be. ie, bones, brain, lungs, etc. Hug everyone you love, and tell them I love you every chance you get!
