Amalgamation for Wellington Region. Was anyone listening? Obviously not. The Answer always lies in the grey areas. We need amalgamation of infrastructure, purchasing, roading, water etc all under one CEO and Bureaucracy..... But the Political/Elected officials, including Mayors, Councillors must be retained separately so that each area within the region has its own distinct culture and character. While a reduced number of councilors may be worth assessing the identity of Wellington City is not that of Upper Hutt or Porirua. People must have strong elected leadership, this cannot be mimicked by an appointed board of faceless people (as in Auckland). If the current proposal goes through there will be public protest, rate revolts and other upheaval that will see a NO vote at a binding referendum.
