Amateur and professional musicians come and play in the hallways of the Beijing Summer Palace, both to practice in the meditative setting and to delight visitors. Even eminent musicians from the opera or the philharmonic are known to play here freely in a public setting. This flautist masterfully played several traditional Chinese melodies on the Xiao (?) flute. I talked with him in the universal language of musicians which is appreciation and imitation. The fingering with about a dozen holes was different from the Indian flute so I stopped after producing a few notes. Heres about a minute of his melody.
