AmeriCorps VISTA position available with VOLUNTEER STARKVILLE ( Nov. 2013-Nov. 2014) Apply for this position online at: https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?id=46076&fromSearch=true DESCRIPTION Volunteer Starkville was initiated by Green Starkville to connect nonprofits with volunteers and promote volunteerism in Starkville and Oktibbeha County. Last year Volunteer Starkville engaged 2,024 volunteers in community service activities. Their goal is to engage 3,000 volunteers this year with the assistance of a VISTA member to help our community partners. The AmeriCorps VISTA will be employed at Volunteer Starkville. The VISTAs goals will be to: i) connect prospective volunteers to agencies providing educational enrichment, health promotion, civic development, and financial literacy programming to citizens living in poverty; ii) provide a framework to ensure that the feedback of participants enrolled in the programs are part of the evaluation process and that participants have the potential to matriculate into leadership and advisory roles; iii) create a youth development program with the Family Centered Programs at the J.L. King Community Center; and iv) support dropout prevention through sustaining and further developing the Bulldog Mentors program Complementing Activity Implemented by VISTA member VISTA-3 will build on the previous success of Volunteer Starkville (VS). VS has a goal of engaging 3,000 volunteers, many of them focusing on lessening the negative impacts of poverty or implementing long-term strategies to empower the economic capacity of those living in poverty. These include mentoring, tutoring, and alternative education programs. Additionally, the VISTA member will create and refine a program assessment and revision procedure to capture the input and amplify the voice of the citizens who live in poverty. The goal is to matriculate impoverished participants into advisory and leadership roles in the affiliated programs. Through a partnership with the J.L. King Community Center, Modern Woodmen of America, Starkville Parks and Rec, and the local schools, the VISTA member will create a youth development program and target children living in low-income housing within the Starkville community. Children living within Brookville Garden face a future that could be defined by the outcomes commonly associated with growing up in multi-generational poverty: dropping out of school, teenage parenthood, and unemployment. The youth development program will use Modern Woodmen’s Youth Educational Programs to foster personal develop, positive educational orientation, financial literacy, and civic competencies. Through a partnership with the Starkville School District, the Boys and Girls Club, Sally Kate Winters, and East and West Oktibbeha County Schools, the VISTA member will coordinate a tutoring and mentoring called Bulldog Mentors, placing trained MSU student volunteers in tutoring and mentoring positions throughout our community and within our county schools. This is a full-time paid AmeriCorps VISTA position. Interested applicants must be college graduates with a passion for service.
