Hot topics at the conference Feb. 6-8 include a historical look at the 50th anniversary of the New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, ethical and legal issues the media contends with in the age of Twitter and copyright infringement in the digital age. Sullivan: A 50th Anniversary Celebration” — Panelists will commemorate the leading defamation case in U.S. history. They also will discuss its viability in the digital age. Friday, Feb. 7, 9:15 – 10:45 a.m. “Covering the Big Story/Breaking News in the Age of Twitter” — This session will look at the way new technology and citizen journalists have changed the face of news coverage. Panelists will discuss the legal and journalistic challenges of the media’s coverage of breaking news. Friday, Feb. 7, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. “‘Transformative Use’ Turns 20” — Luther Campbell, a band member of the group 2 Live Crew, and others close to Campbell v. Acuff Rose Music will discuss the copyright law case involving a “Pretty Woman” parody in the context of it welcoming an era of free expression versus the effect it has had in a digital age in which the diminished rights of copyright holders have potentially threatened the innovation of new music.
