American Bird Conservancy: Recent research conducted by Environment Canada into bird fatalities from human-linked causes directly mirrors a 2013 U.S. study, providing substantiation that the largest single threat to birds in North America is feral and domestic cats allowed to roam freely outdoors. The study, which appears in the journal Avian Conservation and Ecology, attributed nearly 200 million bird deaths annually to outdoor cats. That total was eight times greater than the next leading causes of mortality - power lines and collisions into building - each estimated at 25 million annually. The next-leading cause was collisions with vehicles, with a rate of about 14 million bird deaths per year.
