American College Dublin held its Commencement exercises on Friday, 10 October 2014 at St. Anns Church on Dawson Street at 11:00 am. The graduating students were conferred with degrees in several disciplines, including liberal arts, international business, creative writing and hospitality management. The graduating students come from more than fifteen countries around the world, including Ireland, the United States of America, Botswana, Bangladesh, Brazil, Estonia, Ethiopia, India, Mauritius, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Thailand, Syria, the United Kingdom and Venezuela. Academic convocation also took place as part of the ceremony, in which current ACD students whose academic performance over the preceding semester had achieved required grade point average levels were admitted to College honor societies. The student address was delivered by Hermon Tsegaye, she urged the graduates to enjoy the little things in life, because one day we’ll look back and realize they were the big things. She offered further inspiration when she advised remember don’t lose track of your ideals. If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place. And remember to always become yourself. Because to learn something means to recognize and explore our potential. The commencement address was delivered by Barbara Schmidt, who was also awarded an honorary doctorate. After many years of success in business and philanthropy, Barbara Schmidt partnered with the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Peace Studies Program to promote dialogue in the greater community on the topic of inner peace in 2001. Five years later, she launched Peaceful Mind Peaceful World, a community outreach program designed to promote the principles she had taught and studied for years in her work with FAU. Peaceful Mind Peaceful World incorporates workshops and weekly teachings with Barbara and many of her mentors, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dr. Jane Goodall, medical intuitive Caroline Myss, authors Dan Millman and James Finley, and Dr. Andrew Weil, and others. Barbara founded the Spirit of Giving Network, and co-founded and served as President of the Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities of South Florida, raising millions of dollars in proceeds. In May 2014 Barbara Schmidt launched her highly-anticipated book, The Practice, the product of over thirty years of commitment to personal development and research. The Practice provides simple tools for managing stress, finding inner peace, and uncovering happiness.
