.... American steelworkers outraged by the decision to outsource the renovation work of Staten Island’s Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to China say the job should stay in country. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) outsourced the $235 million renovation project to China for work on the steel span, but U.S. steelworkers are furious. ‘It’s a kick in the teeth. There’s a lot of New Yorkers who would be thrilled to work on this project. It should be American made,’ United Steelworkers’ Vice President Tom Conway. According to Conway, the real issue is money, as it would cost another $100 million to keep the project in the U.S. ‘This job here is about $30 an hour. In China, the workers will get anywhere from $10 to $15 a day.’ The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, a double-decked suspension bridge — which opened in 1969 after 10 years of construction — was built by American steel and iron workers. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2353523/Outsourcing-New-York-bridge-renovation-China-kick-teeth-say-US-labour-unions.html
