Amidst all the chaos going on in the world at present, Im seeing a lot of chat about the Scottish independence issue. (Admittedly, 90% of it is from Cameron Jack, but I still find it interesting to read.) So what do you guys think will happen? Heres my two cents worth, and/or Mystic Meg prediction: IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN. Not necessarily because Scotland wont vote for it, but if they do, we will never know. We will simply be told it was a close call. Or alternatively, Scotland WILL gain independence, but itll really still be the same people running the show behind the scenes. Why? Because in this apparent nutbag conspiracy theorists opinion, DEMOCRACY IS A SHAM. Its very core ethos doesnt exist any more any where in the world; the only difference is the West chooses to retain the illusion of democracy. (However, even that is gradually slipping away.) Sorry to break it to you folks, but Democracy was hijacked by aggressive Capitalism long ago. The British Empire helped pioneer this (finding common ground with those pesky rebels and former enemies, the Yanks), however now all that grandeur has slipped away, because its impractical to rule over nations youre separated from by thousands of miles/oceans. So we settle for the United Kingdom, because lets face it, were now pretty much an island with little more than a global financial system under our boot. This same British Empire (whether under a different guise or not) fought for generations even in my lifetime, for a tiny strip of land at the top of a neighbouring island that isnt even part of the same contiguous land mass, eg: Northern Ireland. The Brits held on tenaciously like some kind of rabid bulldog battling a postman over a newspaper, and still own the land to this day. Gibraltar is an even better example. So do I really think the British Empire will simply hand back almost half the actually contiguous territory of its historic island stronghold to an untested and genuinely independent new political party/system by volition... along with the revenue, and all conceivable gravitas within the international community??? Nope. Nope, I do not: its just not Realpolitik. You dont hand back your Empire unless you physically can no longer control it. Of course, I could be wrong... but well see. REMEMBER PEEPS, YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST :)
