Amtrak AAPRCO Special heads east at Mp. 289 Corning. This area was named The Narrows because of a narrow canal tow path which later became a road connecting Gibson & Denmark. The D.L.&W.R.R. filled in the Chemung Canal in 1888 when that company built its line here. The Erie , which for 101 years was located on the citys southside, relocated beside the DLW. The 2 railroads merged in October 1960 and the DL ripped up between Binghamton and Gibson. When Conrail took over in 1976 , it was 5 years until they re located the Erie Relocation between Milepost 286. 3 & Mp. 289.4 . Conrail basically replaced the DLW between these points during 1992 when a major single tracking of the Southern Tier Line was happening. The Erie Signal system , the old semephore type, were also replaced by CR. NS has recently invested in new signals and created bigger blocks along the STL.
