Amy Noyes DeValk: Last year, my daughter brought home notebooks full of her own writing. She chose the topics and wrote volumes of creative, thoughtful stories about what SHE wanted to write. This year, everything she has brought home has been from a prompt. It finally hit me - 3rd grade is the first year of TCAP. She is opted out, but still doesnt get to write about topics of her choosing. She is a fantastic writer, but I can see her frustration. She even told me, Mom, I never get to write what I want to anymore. It is just wrong that her creativity is being stifled, and totally unfair.
