Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis aka Lou Gehrigs disease is a progressive neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to the death of these neurons. When motor neurons die, the brains ability to initiate and control movment is lost; resulting in complete paralysis( and inevitably death). Currently there is no known cure for ALS which is why awareness and funding for research is so important.
