An Open Letter to Members of Parliament in connection with the possible accession of Latvia to the euro zone. We, the society “Latvija par latu”, want to inform you about the violations the fundamental principles of democracy and human rights in Latvia. Despite the fact that Latvia formally fulfils the conditions for the adoption of the euro, the absolute majority of the Latvian population are against the introduction of the euro. This is evidenced by the data of numerous authoritative surveys of social attitudes, and all the people in Latvia know this. You are probably not aware that: 1) this year, three organizations – “Par Neatkarīgu Latviju” web.cvk.lv/pub/public/30456.html, “Latvija par latu” web.cvk.lv/pub/public/30531.html and “Par latu, pret eiro” web.cvk.lv/pub/public/30549.html have tried to initiate referendums on introduction of the euro, but have received refusals from the relevant authority (Central Election Commission). These refusals have been appealed to the courts, but the proceedings are being delayed, thus giving the government opportunity to adopt the euro without the approval of the Latvian people; 2) as a response to this non-democratic action of the government, the society “Latvija par latu” has initiated the dissolution of the Parliament. It was allowed on 28 May 2013 web.cvk.lv/pub/public/30622.html . Currently, the society “Latvija par latu” is trying to collect the required 10000 signatures for initiating the referendum on dissolution of the Parliament; 3) the society “Latvija par latu” has appealed against “Euro adoption procedure law” likumi.lv/doc.php?id=254741 in the Constitutional Court of Latvia (14.06.2013) as being not in compliance with Article 1 and Article 2 of the Latvian Constitution. The society “Latvija par latu”, other public bodies, as well as many Latvian citizens are staring in dismay at the European Commission and the European Parliament, which invite such a non-democratic country like Latvia, where its government spits on its people depriving it of participation in decision-making on issues of national importance, to join the euro area. The society asks the European Parliament and the European Commission to withdraw its invitation for Latvia to join the euro until not only the economic requirements are completed, but also until the fundamental principles of democracy and human rights are observed. 27 June 2013. Respectfully, Andris Orols, the Chairman of the Board of the society “Latvija par latu”.
