An amateur film review of Baboy (Pig) A Story of a Davao Undercover Cop SPOILERS AHEAD. (Tanawa nalang sa una ang film. Pasensya daan sa mga grammar errors) Baboy (Pig) A Story of a Davao Undercover Cop is a suspense short film directed by EJ Fernandez Don Vito. The film runs at under four minutes. It tells the story of two friends, Pabs and Mads (whom I assumed have known each other for years) and their plan to put an end to their bosss illegal gambling business. During their confrontation with the boss, the events that followed turned sour after their boss revealed a dark secret that neither Pabs nor Mads wanted to hear. The film ended with Pabs and Mads at the beginning of their fight. From what I can figure, the director may have decided to purposely end the film without a resolution, for the audience to infer their own ending of the film. And their inference will rely on how much information (visual cues/elements, etc) was presented to the audience. At the beginning of the film, Pabs is seen texting on his phone with a tense look on his face. When Mads arrived, Pabs hurriedly puts his phone in his pocket. Mads shows a picture of his son to Pabs and were having a little chat. Based on this, we can infer that they have been good friends for quite sometime; and also, the idea that Pabs may be hiding something from Mads. Further into the movie, during the confrontation, their boss revealed that Pabs is an undercover cop and that he was behind the entrapment operation that lead to the death of Madss brother. On the premise that Pabs was really setting up an entrapment operation with his fellow cops at the time that we saw him texting at the beginning of the film, then why does he have to get Mads involved in this? Does Pabs have a grudge against him that he also wanted him to get arrested along with the boss? Or worse, have Mads get killed too during a possible shootout if, however, the police backup arrives? This could be answered if there was a sort of flashback or other visual cues. Near the end of the film, when the boss revealed to Mads that it was Pabs who got his brother killed in an entrapment operation, there was little or no attempt at all from Pabs to give Mads an explanation. Rather, Pabs has this expression on his face of a person with no remorse. So, has Pabs been playing the wolf in a sheeps clothing character all along? My conclusion is that he was, based on what I have seen. I like the film because it has the potential to become better a movie should the director decide to release an extended cut. I suggest adding more depth to the characters to create a clearer landscape of the film from which the audience can get more ideas to support their different resolutions of the film. Nonetheless, I enjoyed watching the film.
