An aromatic spice with a distinctive bitter flavor and strong, warm aroma due to its abundant oil content. Cumin seeds are actually the small dried fruit of an annual plant in the parsley family. Native to the Mediterranean, cumin is hotter to the taste, lighter in color, and larger than caraway, another spice its sometimes confused with. Based on a recent study by Zare, Roghayes,et al,[1] entitled “Effect of cumin powder on body composition and lipid profile in overweight and obese women”, 88 overweight, / obese women were randomly assigned women lost 26% reduction in waist circumference, 32% more body fat lost and increased lean mass conservation. The 88 women were put into 2 groups for 3 months either with or without the help of 3 g/d cumin powder with yogurt at two meals (each time 1.5 g cumin + 150 ml low-fat yogurt | the control group received the same amount of yogurt, but without cumin). The total weight loss for the cumin group was 6.2kg and 4.19kg for the control group. Although 6.2kg doesn’t sound like much, it’s quite a bit of weight to lose just by adding 3g of cumin per day.
