An article from last year: -------- “What I’m really saying is that a lot of people nowadays cling to the idea of a slow evolution of human history – something I believe is more fantastic than the belief that God will raise us from the dead.” All the advances in human rights that we’ve seen – religious freedom, racial equality, equality for gays and so on – are reversible, he believes. “We like to think that we can’t go backwards, but we can. We do it all the time. And the best recent example of that is torture.” Unusually – very unusually – for a contemporary philosopher, Gray has a lot of time for religion, and no time at all for someone like Richard Dawkins. “I see all these evangelical atheists as comic figures. They spend all their time going, ‘How can people be so unreasonable as to believe this or that.’ And my reply is, ‘maybe your idea of reason, of rationality, has something wrong with it’?” An atheist himself, Gray has no wish to try to convert anyone to unbelief. Rather, he says, he’d like to shake up people’s way of thinking – “so that we can see more possibilities in the world, and not be trapped in a particular idea or doctrine.”
