An email that was a must that I sent to the VCU PEP BAND this - TopicsExpress

An email that was a must that I sent to the VCU PEP BAND this morning: Music is important to everyone. If youre a musician or a chemist or a homeless person even a deaf person music is important. The thing is that as musicians sometimes we get really caught up in the technicality of the music. While that is of extreme importance its not what makes you feel the music. I have encountered not enough people that understand this. Honestly its the #1 reason Im glad I went to VCU and not JMU or GMU or any other school I got accepted to. Not that those institutions have different philosophies but much like you should only go to a church where you feel you get fed, VCU is where I got fed. From Dr Austin all the way down to my sax teacher, Ed Fraedrich it was taught that playing the right notes and rhythms were important but being the music is much more important. Well being out of the music field for so long I sort of lose touch with that and the people that endorse those ideas. This school year in particular I personally have had the chance to listen to now 2 people talk about music in a way different then those who master notes and rhythms. Just as I have stated before the Trombone Shorty concert was one of the times where actually talking to him was incredibly humbling and eye opening that people really feel the same way I do. I dont usually endorse shows but if you have not had a chance to watch The Voice this season then you are doing yourself a great injustice. Pharrell has strengthened me and my thoughts on music. Just his eloquent talks of what it means and what he looks for and how it translates makes me emotional. Here is a guy who has a true PASSION for the essence of what music is. He is sharing that with the world. I encourage you all to watch and learn. Remember some things are not taught they can only be learned. This is one of them. Feel free to share your thoughts on the subject. I will share this email on Facebook and start a dialogue because it is important. You know I spoke in Charlotsville this summer at a conference and what I spoke about was along the same lines but it was more in the context of the setting. But I played a piece that was introduced to me my freshman year of college. I was shown that simple notes and simple rhythms have power if you make them powerful. When I spoke I played this piece for everyone. I will attach it hope you listen and enjoy. https://youtube/watch?v=J12zprD7V1k
