An incident has been quoted that once an atheist came into the the court of Bagdād denying the existence of Allāh (s.w.t.). He said that the universe came into existence on its own and continues to exist. Any argument based on the Qur’ān or Ahādīth was not acceptable to him. No one in the court could convince him nor give him a befitting reply. The vizier asked Shaikh Mufīd to handle this situation as the atheist was visiting the court daily and posed his question in the gathering of the ambassadors from the non-muslim countries and thus was an embarrassing situation. Shaikh Mufīd agreed for a debate with him the next day on the condition that he should come to the court at an appointed time. At the appointed time next day the court of full of people but Shaikh Mufīd himself was not seen. The Shaikh purposely arrived late and the atheist told him, “Where were you hiding yourself”? Shaikh Mufīd replied, “I would have reached the court on schedule, but as I reached the riverside, I saw a peculiar scene there. It was so astonishing that my feet wouldn’t advance towards my destination! I saw a boat in the river that was floating on the water without any sailor. It was coming ashore on one side, picking up passengers and disembarking them on the other side. From that side it picked up passengers and dropped them on this side! When I saw the boat had no sailor I was very astonished!” Hearing this, the man had a hearty laugh and said, “How is it that the boat was making the up and down trips without any sailor?” Mufīd said, “When you think that a small boat cannot fend for itself without someone to row it, then how do you imagine that such a big universe will function without the One who controls it!” The man said that none else had debated with him in this manner and he accepted the existence of Allāh (s.w.t).
