An independence referendum was held in East Timor on August 30, 1999. The referendum was to be held to determine whether East Timor would remain part of Indonesia, as a Special Autonomous Region, or separate from Indonesia. And finally, the result of referendum is more than 80 per cent of the population voted for independence in a referendum and the countrys first free parliamentary elections on the same day two years later, East Timors former president Jose Ramos-Horta warns that there are no short cuts to peace, to nation-building and state-building.
