An industrialist, Chief David Sabo Kente, has been picked by people of Southern Taraba, to contest next year’s governorship election in the state. The choice of the Southern Taraba people was arrived at during the people’s congress held in Wukari, where elders and youth groups in the zone from across the country were said to have unanimously picked Kente. Spokesman for People of Southern Taraba, Chief Jibrin Anfani, said Kente was chosen after a careful examination of all aspirants in the zone that showed interest in contesting Taraba governor’s seat. “The southern part of the state is the only region that has never had an opportunity to govern the state since the creation of Taraba State 25 years ago and it is believed that in the interest of justice equity and fair play, the other zones should support our candidate as he is the one that has been chosen to represent the zone,” Anfani said. But a group under the aegis of Southern Taraba Stakeholders’ Forum yesterday issued a counter statement saying the purported endorsement of Mr. Kente as consensus candidate for the zone was false and deceptive. James Abe Nwunuji, public relations officer of Southern Taraba Stakeholders Forum, who issued a statement yesterday, said while Mr. Kente was eminently qualified to contest and be governor of the state he has not been so chosen. “The news about his endorsement is false, deceptive and distorted fact meant to mislead the good masses of our dear zone who are keenly anticipating the emergence of a consensus candidate from us”, he said adding that Anfani should point out any other aspirant from the zone [apart from Kente] that was there. “This is not to say we are fighting Kente; we have nothing against him, but we want our good people of Taraba south, our teeming supporters from the other zones and the general public to note that what happened was just a farce by the staff of the DSK Foundation.
