An interesting comment on the advantages of a university education: "I made a career in the oil patch trades and by the end of my career I was taking down over $300K/yr. In my retirement I am taking history courses at the small local branch of University of Alberta. The non-tenured professor of my most recent course told me that she was making less than $46K in this current gig; the lady has an undergraduate degree and two post-graduate degrees. 30 years younger than I, she is unmarried and dating a rig pig. She feels that she has no hope of ever acquiring a tenured professor position, no hope of ever owning her own home, no hope of ever being able to afford to have children. She is quizzing me about opportunities for her in the oil patch. In all seriousness I suggested to her that she apply to Syncrude for a job driving one of the monster trucks with the $75K tires. Syncrude likes female drivers for those monsters. Maintenance costs on the monsters are significantly less on trucks driven by females."
