An odi (vedi) from Southern Maldives in full sail. Some people wonder how the Maldivians who were brought to St. Helena could end up as far as the Southern Atlantic. But these ships were built precisely to endure long oceanic journeys on a yearly basis. If they missed land (Ceylon or South India) on the onward journey they could end up in Burma or the Andamans, but if they missed the Maldives on the way back they could end up very far away. The ones who ended up in St. Helena were lucky, some of these ships got lost with people, cargo and all, and were never again heard of.
