An unbiased, well-written piece abt d General without insulting our collective intelligence... Please, please and please stop advertising your mental indolence online. Your family members are blushing on your behalf even if you are not: Ehn, if Buhari is not corrupt, where did he get N27 million from? Ehn, if Buhari is not corrupt how can he collect a 27 million loan that he cant pay back unless he steals gofment money? Ehn, what is Buharis source of income? Ehn, for Buhari to be collecting overdraft from his bank manager when he is so broke amounts to corruption, nepotism, parapoism, come-and-chopism, yada yada yada Im like serzly? The source of Buharis income? You dont know? You dont know how to find out before coming online to spout arrant contra-sense? And you want to be taken seriously as someone who has opinions worth listening to? Okay, let me treat your malady quickly: our journey is still far. 1. Buhari is a retired head of state. Recognised as such by the National Assembly. That is all you need to know. There is no Number 2. Bye. In case what is doing you is more than mere criminal ignorance, here is a further snippet: The legislature is planning to increase the former leaders package from N250 million proposed in the 2010 budget to about N2 billion. The chairman of the House of Representatives committee on appropriation, Ayo Adeseun, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with NEXT. The money is meant to take care of the former leaders pension, medicare, yearly vacation abroad, offices and general maintenance. This is besides the N500,000 each of the former leaders is reportedly paid whenever they attend the Council of State meeting, which is held periodically. Well deserved? Only seven out of the 12 presidents and heads of states who have ruled the country are still alive. They are Yakubu Gowon (1966-1975), Olusegun Obasanjo (1975-1979 and 1999-2007), Shehu Shagari (1979-1983) MUHAMMADU BUHARI (1983-1985), and Ibrahim Babangida (1985-1993). The others are Ernest Shonekan (Aug 1993-November 17, 1993), and Abdulsalam Abubakar (1998-1999) . NEXT, Jan 4 2010 nigeriavillagesquare/forum/blog-feeds/ 46965-tragedy-called-nigeria.html So if you are of the belief that Buhari must remain broke forever, so as not to be able to challenge your corruption idols financially, go and face the National Assembly with your issues (well founded I must admit), about ex-coupists collecting N2 billion annually from a democratic government as a reward for toppling a democracy. But please dont come here spreading your stupidity. Its giving me allergies. That is for the mindless anti-Buharists. The mindless Buharistas are another matter. Now hear me: You have got an awful lot to learn before you qualify to open your mouth. About the wretched history of this beautiful country. About what constitutes good governance, beyond hounding politicians and journalists into prison without trial and enforcing queues with horsewhips. About why the rule of law and the dignity of the human person is not just a matter for diplomatic tea parties and NGO conferences. About the fact that Nigeria is not so specially cursed that we will accept that all we are faced with is a stark choice between the present corruption robbing us of our livelihoods, and the oppression Buhari once represented and has never repudiated, which robbed us of our dignity. Things were different then? Maybe. The onus is on him to prove that he recognises that things have changed, and he with it. He can start by explaining why he refused to appear before the Oputa panel to answer charges of human rights abuses perpetrated by his government and offer a FULL UNRESERVED APOLOGY for that act of unbridled arrogance and hubris. He can start by admitting to the bloody excesses of the regime he headed, explain what needs explaining, and tender a FULL UNRESERVED APOLOGY for the lawlessness and bloody-mindedness of his soldiery; so awful that we actually welcomed the distilled evil that Babangida turned out to be with dancing masquerades and jubilant street parties. Or you think weve forgotten? Not a whit. He can start, right now, not after the damage has been done, the process of drumming it into the limbic cortex of his swivel-eyed supporters that win, lose or inconclusive election, the prospect of a Buhari presidency is no excuse to go all Aro Mental on those fellow Nigerians who happen not to share their belief that he is the best thing to happen to Nigeria since fura de nono. I know who I would rather see in Aso Rock in 2015 if I were forced to choose between PDP puppet GEJ and Buhari. Neither appeals to me, but I know the one I can tolerate even less than the other. The point though is that Buhari will not even smell that Aso Rock until he and his supporters start doing a few things differently. This sanctimonious he-is-the-only-honest- man-in-Nigeria claptrap is a backhanded insult to the tens of millions of Nigerians who have had to live their whole lives blighted by the lopsided constitutional arrangements and absolute certitude of people like him who were cock-sure they knew better than the rest of Nigeria what was best for Nigeria. How does he propose to fight corruption? With military tribunals and retro-active decrees? Or something more civilised and intelligently thought out? Beyond the anti-corruption shibboleth what else does he propose to do to move the nation forward? Lets hear it for chrissakes! Thats what we are here for. Whats the plan? If Buhari gets one vote over and above the 12 million he got last time around, it wont be because Nigerians have suddenly realised that PDP is even worse than what they knew it was in 2011, or that GEJ and PDP are one as bad as the other. it will be because the General, and his followers would have developed enough respect for the Nigerian voter to tell him in his language: I am one of you, not I am better than you. I will help YOU in your quest to attain the good things of life legitimately, not just I am preparing Armageddon reloaded for corrupt politicians once I get back into power. I actively encourage respect and tolerance for all faiths and I will instantly rebuke anyone who feeds religious intolerance using my name, not just Im not a religious bigot. Get this. Nigeria does not owe Buhari a single vote. He wants to save Nigeria? The first step is to work to earn our trust. Or he can, with all our best wishes, go jump in a lake. All of una get crase ba? Im right here waiting
