Residents in HaMabote, where a special operation unit is based, say they have heard an exchange of gunfire. The Lesotho military says it has mounted an operation to disarm some members of the police and civilians who were intending to collaborate with Prime Minister Tom Thabanes All Basotho convention called Under the Tree (UTTA). Lesotho military spokesperson, Captain Ntlele Ntoi, says army intelligence has learnt that some police officers intended to pass arms and ammunitions to UTTA. Ntoi says the military is empowered to prevent terrorism, internal disorder and threats to essential services. It has surrounded the police headquarters and the Mabote police station.
