EUROPE ◦June 3-4: An EU-Russia summit will take place in Yekaterinburg, Russia. ◦June 5: EU staff is expected to go on a one-day strike to protest proposed cuts. ◦June 6: The EU Commission is expected to decide whether to implement temporary tariffs on Chinese solar panels. ◦June 6: The State of the European Union conference will take place in Brussels. The event will bring together private sector representatives to discuss productivity and growth in Europe. ◦June 6: The governing council of the European Central Bank will meet in Frankfurt. ◦June 6-9: French President Francois Hollande will visit Japan. He is expected to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to discuss economic and defense ties. FORMER SOVIET UNION ◦June 3: The first court hearing in the murder of Novaya Gazeta reporter Anna Politkovskaya will take place. ◦June 4-7: Russian and Norwegian naval forces will conduct a joint exercise in the Barents Sea. ◦June 5: Representatives from Russia, the United States and the United Nations will meet in Geneva to discuss preparations for an international conference on Syria. ◦June 5: A Russia-Azerbaijan forum will be held in Volgograd, Russia. Representatives of both countries’ presidential administrations, executive and legislative authorities, social organizations and business circles will be in attendance. SOUTH ASIA ◦June 2-7: A British business delegation led by Eric Pickles, the United Kingdom’s secretary of state for communities and local government, will travel to India. ◦June 3-5: Indian Home Secretary R.K. Singh will travel to Nepal to meet with Nepali Home Secretary Nabin Ghimire to discuss bilateral issues. ◦June 5: Pakistan’s interim government will transfer power to the newly elected government. ◦June 5-8: Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov will make official visits to India and Sri Lanka. ◦June 6-10: More than 250 delegates from 22 Indian states are expected to attend a Hindi convention in Goa. EAST ASIA ◦May 28-June 6: Chinese special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike will visit Jordan, Egypt and the Arab League headquarters in Cairo. Wu will exchange views with relevant parties on the Middle East peace process. ◦May 31-June 6: Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay state visits to Trinidad and Tobago (May 31 to June 2), Costa Rica (June 2-4) and Mexico (June 4-6). ◦June 3-10: Singapore’s military will conduct exercises in various parts of the country. ◦June 4: A group of students will hold a vigil in Taipei to mark the 24th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre and to call for the release of Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo and other political prisoners in China. ◦June 7-8: Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Barack Obama will meet for the first time at the Sunnylands estate in southern California. Xi and Obama are expected to exchange views on issues such as the global economic recovery, China’s involvement in cyber attacks and cyber-espionage and the North Korean nuclear issue. ◦June 7-8: The chairman of Taiwan’s Straits Exchange Foundation, Lin Zhongsen, will participate in a forum on Taiwan in Nantong, Jiangsu province, China. He will also visit local Taiwanese businessmen in the city of Suzhou and could meet with Chen Deming, the chairman of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits. AMERICAS ◦Unspecified Date: Venezuelan government representatives will meet with the heads of the agriculture and food business sectors. ◦Unspecified Date: The head of Venezuelan state energy company Petroleos de Venezuela, Rafael Ramirez, will travel to Beijing to negotiate a loan agreement with China National Petroleum Corp. over the funding of joint projects. ◦June 3-4: Chilean President Sebastian Pinera will visit Washington to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama and discuss trade and visa requirements. ◦June 4: Opponents of Peru’s Conga mining project will convene a regional assembly in Sorochuco. ◦June 4: Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will travel to Lima, Peru, to meet with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and participate in a business summit. ◦June 4-5: Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles Radonski will visit Lima as part of a regional trip seeking support against the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela. ◦June 4-6: Guatemala will host the 43rd General Assembly of the Organization of American States, where regional drug policies will be discussed. MIDDLE EAST/NORTH AFRICA ◦May 29-June 4: Algeria will host the Algiers International Trade Fair. ◦June 3: A committee of Yemen’s National Dialogue Conference is scheduled to meet with the president. ◦June 3-6: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will visit Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, meeting with political leaders and attending business forums. ◦June 4: An independent U.N. investigative committee charged with monitoring war crimes will release its next report. ◦June 5: Libya’s political isolation law, which bars senior Gadhafi-era officials from government, will take effect. ◦June 5-24: The Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani air forces will participate in joint exercises called Peace Hawks 1 from King Fahd Air Base in Saudi Arabia. AFRICA ◦June 1-3: Approximately 40 African heads of state are expected to attend the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development in Yokohama, Japan. ◦June 3-6: Mozambican President Armando Guebuza is scheduled to visit South Korea to discuss bilateral economic ties. ◦June 4-5: South African President Jacob Zuma will meet with Japanese officials and business leaders. ◦June 5: Darfur rebels and Sudanese government representatives will meet in Qatar for another round of negotiations in the ongoing conflict in the region.
