Anambra Assembly Investigates ANSIEC over N2.8bn Fraud The Anambra State House of Assembly has directed its committee on elections to commence investigation into an alleged extortion by the state Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) from aspirants, who bought nomination forms from it for the previously scheduled October 5, local government elections in the state, which has now been rescheduled for December 14. The directive to investigate the state electoral umpire was sequel to a motion brought by Hon. Tony Muonagor, the member representing Idemili North state constituency under matter of urgent importance. The lawmaker had drawn the attention of the assembly to the alleged extortion of N250,000 each from more than 500 aspirants of all the parties at both the chairmanship and councillorship levels. Although, nomination forms were to be given by political parties, but money for the forms were paid into the ANSIEC bank accounts. “It is a fraud. In some wards, some parties have four or five aspirants for one position and we have 326 wards in Anambra State. They all paid this N250,000. Multiply at least four aspirants per ward by 326 and imagine the amount of money this commission has defrauded this unsuspecting aspirants. “Now, the so called election has been postponed by the commission from October 5 to December 14, and the commission is now saying the reason for this postponement is that parties have not submitted the names of candidates from their conducted primaries. The postponement is a fraud by the APGA led government because there would be no election,” he said. THISDAY gathered that the commissioner in charge of the commission, Mr. Sylvester Okonkwo, since its former chairman, Prof. Titus Eze, who is now in court was sacked by the state government in 2011, cannot conduct local government election because the Act establishing the commission had no provision for an acting chairman.
