Anambra guber: Equity Campaign Group cautions parties against inflammatory statements Our Reporter November 7, 2013 By NWANKWO CHIAMAKA The Willie Obiano Equity Campaign Group has advised political parties to desist from making statements that seem to reduce the victims of the recent tragedy in Uke to mere ‘campaign materials’. The group, which commiserated with families affected of the recent tragedy which claimed no fewer than 25 lives, prayed for the quick healing of all those injured in the incident. Director, Media and Publicity of the group, Uchem Obi, regretted the unfortunate statement credited to the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to the effect that the Uke tragedy would not have occurred if Governor Peter Obi and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Willie Obiano, had not attended the religious event. He said the bizarre statement showed Alhaji Mohammed’s emotional bankruptcy, political recklessness and gross insensitivity to the pains and losses of the victims and their families. “We want to let Mohammed and the APC know that Anambra State is not a laboratory where they can carry out absurd political experiments. This tragedy does not represent a platform for marketing falsehood which has become the hallmark of the party in the state”, he said. The group also regretted that Alhaji Mohammed also called Dr. Obiano an unpopular candidate and wondered the yardstick he used in measuring that. “But for record purposes, we want to remind Mohammed of how popular his candidate is. His candidate was so unpopular in 2003 that he had to go into a fetish agreement before a deity at Okija shrine to rig the election of that year. He made a public confession of his roles at the shrine and the robbery of Peter Obi’s mandate. “He was so unpopular he lost to Peter Obi again in 2010 and he was so unpopular that he needed a re-run to defeat Prof. Dora Akunyili in the Senatorial election of 2011 with less than seven votes. This is not the hallmark of popularity. What Mohammed refers to his candidates popularity is the delusion that was triggered by people’s response to achievements of his illegal government which was in comparison to the total failure of previous governments”, the group added.
