And Number 1: 1993s Oscar-winning Schindlers List. Spielberg has made many films which could be categorized as masterpieces (as I said earlier, I think the Top 6 are all masterpieces), but this is his masterpiece beyond all others! Im sure I dont need to tell anyone its a Holocaust film, everyone knows that by now, but Id like to point out its NOT a war film! This is a character study, a drama that has war as its backdrop, even if its obviously a huge part of the film. But the humanity at the core of the film is what Schindlers List is really all about. Schindlers rise to industrial power is coupled with his simultaneous spiritual and moral fall from grace, and that is powerful drama material indeed! This is obviously followed by his subsequent attempt at redemption through his repentance. It remains ambiguous whether or not he has attained that redemption, but Ben Kingsleys powerful line, taken from the Talmud, Whosoever saves one life saves the world entire, suggests he does. Many technical elements also make Schindlers List a masterpiece: Janusz Kaminskis unforgiving black-and-white photography, Spielbergs subtle filmmaking, John Williams score (his best to date), as well as Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neesons mesmerizing performances! The fact that neither one of them won an Oscar for their performances is a crime against the film. Schindlers List is a difficult film to watch, but an essential and important one too, and no one will EVER forget the little girl in red (the only hint of color in this 3-hour-and-16-minute film) walking through piles of dead people while more people are being senselessly, mercilessly and cruelly shot. That little girl broke the whole worlds heart... and she continues to do so 21 years on...
