And for those of you who DO NOT SPEAK GREEK !!! Due to the new measures imposed by our debtors in the loan agreement, the situation has worsened considerably in Greece in 2012, resulting in the number of deaths exceeding the number of births by 16,297 (!), (almost four times higher than the 2011 figures). Deaths of actual Greek nationals exceeded births by Greek women by 29,101, whereas births by foreign women exceeded deaths of foreign nationals by 12,804. The dramatic developements mentioned above are due to the effects of the new austerity measures demanded in the bail-out agreement. As a result of these measures married couples working for drastically reduced salaries and, even worse, married couples where either one or both partners are unemployed, are either unable to have children (those that do not already have any), or have more children (those who wish to have more). Young unemployed people are unable to get married and are restricted to de-facto relationships without children. A number of highly qualified young unemployed people have migrated (some with their children) to different countries and will probably never return to Greece. And as if all that is not enough, there has been an increase in the number of deaths from a variety of causes, including an increase in the number of suicides for financial reasons.
