And since I feel like Im on a roll...Ive had a shitty week followed by a good couple of days Aaaannnnnd a couple of margaritas... what does going Galt mean anyway? Progresives love to laugh at the Randian philosophies of Objectivism and even Existentialism. In Atlas, Rand suggests that the producer class has bettered society simply by their own production and owes no duty to anyone other than to them self. In her novel, the major producers decide to no longer be shackled by the claims of the people and bureaucrats upon their ideas and labors. The decide to no longer contribute their ideas and skills and to effectively stop the engine of the world. Like if Steve Jobs said screw it, Im sick of everyone talking trash about how I dont pay enough taxes and use slave labor in China, dont you assholes know how many millionaires Ive created and how many Americans pay their mortgages with a paycheck from my company, let alone how many people simply benefit from my products? Its an interesting concept. Heres my take. We are currently living in a mild fascist era in America. The major producers have all been co-opted by the Federal Government. Facebook, Comcast, Exxon Mobil, GM, Monsanto, Hollywood; theyre all invited to the White House. Theyre not going to shut down anything. Theyre in on it. We are not. I am not. In my Atlas Shrugged, its not Rearden Steel or Taggart Transcontinental who will shut down the engine of the world. In my world, theyre already part and parcel of the monolithic federal behemoth. Here, in reality, its the everyday singularly productive individual who is going Galt. Its me, or you, who realize that the jokes on us for trying, for working hard, paying our taxes, playing the good game. What will happen when the average Joe decides that playing by the rules is for suckers? How many more White House scandals will it take? How many more stories of corporations getting away with flagrant violations of the law? Every day more people who used to be good, hard working Americans join the ranks of people who are disabled, unemployed, tax dodgers or whatever other term fits the zeitgeist. I cant lose with 22s, thats whats up! Happy Holidays, JL
