And speaking of many cultures, many languages, did you know that Spanish is the primary language spoken by nearly five percent of people living in our region? Nearly one percent of our regional population speaks Vietnamese, and many others speak Chinese and Russian. As the planning organization for our region, Metro is required by federal law to provide services to non-English-speaking communities – and as our region’s demographics continue to change, we must make sure we can communicate with everyone who lives here. Recent analysis shows that there are 13 specific languages spoken by more than 1,000 individuals in area, including Korean, Somali, Tagalog and Mon-khmer Cambodian. While many folks speak a different language than I do, what they have in common is they are all part of our regional community – and they have the right to understand the decisions that my colleagues and I on the Metro Council makes that may affect them. You may notice some signage, materials and language accessibility tools that are new as we continue to improve our work which we do on your behalf. You are the residents of my district and my regional community and I respect you because respecting everyone just makes good sense.
