And the New Governor Enters the Picture … The first few days of the 2014 Assembly were days of watching and waiting: would Terry McAuliffe be sworn in as Governor? Would hell freeze over? Or would we all just be washed away by Saturday’s incessant rainstorm? In actuality, the day brightened — literally for a moment — when the new Governor began speaking and the audience was duly appreciative. I was seated with my daughter about 60 feet behind the new Governor. Honestly, I could have been in a duck blind, with the pouring rain and misty skies. But, lo, it did break and the new Governor spoke, and the parade went off without a hitch. Having survived that first round of waiting, the Senate is now into its second round of waiting — namely, what will happen if/when Lynnwood Lewis is sworn in and Jennifer Wexton captures the open seat in Loudoun on January 21. At that point, Democrats will have captured the vaunted “twenty plus one” that vaulted the Republicans to total and overwhelming control in 2012. Gosh, payback is a … (fill in blank). But let’s focus on representative and democratic government. In the meantime, the Senate committees operate under the current set of “majority” chairs and my own bills get mowed down like spring crabgress. Not that I’m bitter about it. Actually, today was a warm, sunny day in Richmond and had a chance to fit in a 4 mile run this afternoon from the John Marshall (where I’m staying this year), down past Brown’s Island, along the canal, and then over the Manchester Bridge. Got back in time for our first NOVA Caucus meeting at 5 pm. Will see the Governor speak in a few minutes to the full Assembly for his first “State of the Commonwealth.” Hoping that he’ll have the good sense to wrap up in time so we can catch second half of UVA-Duke. Fingers crossed.
