“And the one also who had received the one talent came up and said, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you scattered no seed. And I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’ “But his master answered and said to him, ‘You wicked, lazy slave, you knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I scattered no seed. Then you ought to have put my money in the bank, and on my arrival I would have received my money back with interest. Therefore take away the talent from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.’ Matthew 25:24-28 (NASB) The servant who refused to obey his lord was likewise called into account. In spite of his attempt to defend himself by accusing his lord of severity, he made his judgment the worse. Here we find Jesus interpreting this part of the parable. He said the unprofitable servant would be cast into outer darkness where there was weeping and gnashing of teeth. The last man was self-centered and only thinking of himself. He had hoped to play it safe thus protecting himself from his hard master. However, he was judged for his self-centeredness. We must not make excuses to avoid doing what God calls us to do. If God truly is our Master, we must willingly obey. Our time, abilities, and money are not ours in the first place-we are caretakers, not owners. When we ignore squander, or abuse what we are given, we are rebellious and deserve to be punished. This not necessarily can be concluded this refers to the loss of one’s justification, but may instead portray the forfeiting of one’s reward for committed service in the kingdom, a loss of joy, with weeping and gnashing of one’s teeth, reflecting the remorse for lost opportunities. But is it worth the gamble to find out whether or not it reflects the loss or your justification or of your rewards.
