And we have such trust through Christ toward God. Not that we are - TopicsExpress

And we have such trust through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 2Cor. 3:4-6 ---------------------- Believers trust God because we know that we cannot minister all on our own. It‘s God‘s Spirit that drives us, and leads us to good works, i.e. to do His will. The old covenant that God made with the Israelites had a written law (Ten Commandments, etc), and by itself, demanded perfect obedience but gave no power to obey. It was like a tutor teaching right from wrong with the intent that the Israelites would come to repentance for their sin, and into a saving relationship with God. Hence, it’s said that the ‘letter of the law’ (words written on stone) kills, because it does not have the power to help man obey on its own. Under the new covenant believers receive the Spirit of God to empower us to do God’s will, and God writes His laws on our hearts. Hence, the Spirit gives life.
