Angelique Comes Home From School 6:00 PM. Angelique came home - TopicsExpress

Angelique Comes Home From School 6:00 PM. Angelique came home from her first day as a college sophomore this evening. She looked tired and haggard, as almost all students her age do once they arrive home from school. That was how I looked, I am sure, when I was a college sophomore: I was very much on the lean side, and I wonder today how I even had the excess energy to indulge in theater work that kept me up through dawn. Being a college student in this country is hard work. Sometimes one has to be in a school uniform, as Angelique does; she must wear her Business Administration blazer and slacks every time. Today she had five classes in all, a total of fifteen units already on her first day. I did not ask, but I imagine that she had to go from building to building, up and down staircases, in order to get to and from her classrooms. Add to that the anxiety of meeting new teachers and classmates, taking down notes, having to go to the library, giving up refreshments for lack of time, commuting, walking on pavements that were not designed for walking, and wading through floodwaters. And to think that many students have to come home from school to screaming, dysfunctional parents, equally screaming and dysfunctional siblings, bad neighborhoods, inferior housing with no privacy and no space for study, no computers, and piles of housework. I must apologize to the younger generation that MY generation was unable to do anything about improving their situation, and I can only hope that the younger generation will have the initiative and the power to make a difference, for the sake of their children and grandchildren.
