Animal Husbandry: Lately I have been getting messages from people - TopicsExpress

Animal Husbandry: Lately I have been getting messages from people that are asking about proper husbandry for Iguanas and Tortosies. The only thing that I, personally, can recommend is to do your research prior to the purchase of an exotic animal. For example, our Grand Cayman Blue Iguanas (Cyclura lewisi) get romaine, green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, endive, escarole, collard greens squash, peas, corn, green beans, grapes, apple, watermelon, mango, cantaloupe, hibiscus flowers and yellow trump flowers. Our Sulcata Tortosies (Geochelone sulcata) receive the exact same minus any fruit and receive hay. On cool nights our animals come inside and all inside animals have heat and UVA/UVB lighting. Animals that are tropical and subtropical are misted multiple times per day to kleep humidity up. All animals have clean enclosures and fresh water. Caiman Lizards who live in a 300 gallon pool have their water cleaned every day alone with their rocks in the pool. Snakes are fed once every 5-7 days, 7-10 days or 10-14 days depending on species and size while Varanids and Teiids are fed every other day and the Cyclura and Tortoises are fed every day. Exotic animals are work, and Christmas is around the corner so some parents might think buying an exotic animals is a good idea. My suggestion, go on Craigslist and look at all the unwanted exotics there before going and buying another Ball Python from Petsmart. Do your research and know what youre getting into. Our Red Tailed Boas are 9 feet and over 40 pounds, the baby Borneo Short Tailed Python that we have is now over 30 pounds and 5.4 feet in length with our Sulcata Tortosies being 68 pounds. This is a commitment, no something this is fun for a while and wears off. Exotic animal care is in depth. You cant just throw them in a cage and think theyll going to be okay.
