Animal-rights groups and horse advocates say there is no way to humanely kill horses, and that an iconic symbol of the American West deserves better. They also say there’s no way to ensure the safety of horse meat. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Animal Welfare Institute and Animal Protection of New Mexico issued a joint statement Friday condemning the USDA’s actions. “New Mexicans reject the idea of a horse slaughter plant in our state,” Lisa Jennings, executive director of Animal Protection of New Mexico, said in the statement. “Horses are a valuable part of our heritage, and we have worked hard to develop a robust safety net for them, not condemn them to slaughter.”
