Annie Jump Cannon Google has posted a birthday doodle honoring Annie Jump Cannon, 1863-1941, characterized by Britannica as an American astronomer who specialized in the classification of stellar spectra. Britannica reports that her work exerted “major influence on the evolution of the science of astronomy from one of mere observation to one of great theoretical and philosophical content” and that among “the numerous honors and awards accorded her were the first honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford to be awarded to a woman (1925) and the Henry Draper Medal of the National Academy of Sciences in 1931.
