Announcement: The poster board draft the timeline The Journey of Hispanic to WNY is available at the Niagara Branch Library 280 Porter Avenue for viewing and community input ! Library Hours: Mon-Tue-Wed 12pm-8pm / Thur 3pm-8pm / Fri- Sat 9am-5pm / Closed Sundays Definition of Timeline This timeline represents the history of Hispanics in Western New York, from Jaime Nunós arrival in 1869 to present day. We have populated it with what we consider to be important dates and events that represent the impact Hispanics have made on not just our community, but the community at large. The timeline is a work in progress and for this reason we are reaching out to all of you to help us remember the many possibly forgotten moments in our history that deserve to be archived and celebrated--because without them, we would not be where we are today as community. We would like to open up the revisions of this timeline to all of you so we can ensure accuracy and the proper documentation and inclusion of all historical events. Please feel free to use the sticky notes located next to the banner to write down any revisions, suggestions or additions. Please ensure to include as much information about the event as possible. Most importantly, include the name of the event, organization, person or venue, the date it was incorporated, who started the event, organization or project, and any additional details that can help us with archival documentation. Additionally, if possible, include how we may contact the people who were involved with the event so that we may request an interview for our Bring Us Your History Project, which, is documenting the history of Hispanics in Western New York through digital media. Lastly, we have broken the timeline down into 6 subjects-- Influential People and Moments, Community Organizations, Social Clubs and Venues, News and Media, Elected Officials, and Business/Religion; hopefully these categories will help indicate what types of historical moments we would like to add to this timeline. This is an important moment for the Hispanic community. It has been historically neglected for far too long and now, more than ever, has the opportunity to incorporate itself more deeply into the Western New York fabric, not only in the archives, but in a manner that will also inspire other ethnic groups to gather their stories and be heard. Thank you very much for your continual support. A Collaboration of : Hispanic Heritage Council of Western New York, Buffalo & Erie County Library, History Museum, Art Services Initiative of WNY.
