Anointed Oil The Old Testament priests were instructed to use oil - TopicsExpress

Anointed Oil The Old Testament priests were instructed to use oil in their services unto God. The oil was typically derived from a mixture of crushed olives and spices. The use of oil was permitted to consecrate, or mark, a person or object as set apart for the Lords use. 2Kings 9:6 And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I have anointed thee king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel. Throughout the Bible, people were anointed with oil to signify God’s calling or blessing on their life. God selected people to bless, and others to lead His people. The anointing oil, apart from God, did not make them chosen people. The oil symbolized covenant and identified the selected individuals as anointed. Mark 6:13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. Oil and other objects were consecrated for use in worship to God. Holy objects are not God. Though some objects were bearers of Gods power or a representation of Him, God is not in everything and immaterial objects should not be worshipped as such. Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
