Another Blocker Cowboy - Sorta James Jefferson Davis and his second wife had a daughter, Mary Arizona Davis, born on May 4, 1901, still living in 1997. She is the mother of the late Dan Blocker, who played Hoss Cartwright on the televison program, “Bonanza.” Mary married Ira Shak Blocker. Dan Blocker married Dolphia Lee Parker.6 Bobby Dan Davis Blocker was born December 10, 1928 in Bowie County, Texas, and he died May 13, 1972 in Burbank, California. Dan was a mountain of a man, weighing from 285-360 pounds, six foot-four and a half inches tall. He was urged at one time to run for Texas governor, California congressman, and U.S. Senate from both states. He taught school in Carlsbad, New Mexico for $4,800 a year and made nearly $780,000 in Hollywood. He received a Master’s Degree from Sul Ross College in Alpine, Texas, taught school in Sonora, Texas, 6th grade in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and English in Glendale, California. He was working on his PHD at a university in California when he was sidetracked into Gunsmoke in 1956. He weighed fourteen pounds at birth, said to be the biggest baby ever born in Bowie County. In 1934, his parents moved to O’Donnell, Texas. Dan attended school at Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Hardin Simmons in Abilene, Texas. He was First Sergeant with the 45th Oklahoma Division during his military service during the Korean war. Upon his discharge in 1952, he returned to marry his college sweetheart, Dolphia, and they had twin daughters, Danna and Debra Blocker, and then two sons, David and Dennis. He suffered a fatal blood clot following gall bladder surgery in May of 1972. He was buried at Woodman Cemetery in DeKalb, Bowie County, Texas.
