Another Muslim cleric attacked by gunmen KAMPALA. Another Muslim leader was yesterday night attacked by gunmen who fired 15 bullets at him, but he survived unhurt. Sheikh Haruna Jjemba was attacked in the wee hours of Saturday. The gunmen also shot at his guard who returned fire at the assailants. Sheikh Jjemba is the Amir (leader) of a rival sect that broke away from the mainstream Tabliq establishment headed by Amir Sheikh Muhammad Kamoga based at both Nakasero and William Street mosques. Police Director of Operations Andrew Felix Kaweesi confirmed the incident, saying he was following up the matter but declined to divulge more details. The attack Shiekh Jjemba told Sunday Monitor the gunmen reached his home at about 3am and fired at the private guard to gain access into the house. “They fired about 15 bullets. Some bullets were aimed at the guard but thank God he was able to retaliate before they could hurt him or even get access into my home,” he said by telephone yesterday. He said police had already deployed at the scene and were carrying out forensic investigations. The incident follows similar attacks on other Muslim leaders in less than 10 days. Sheikh Abdul Qadr Muwaya, the Shiite leader, was gunned down at his home in Mayuge District on December 25 and Sheikh Mustafa Bahiiga, the Kampala District Amir of the Jamu-i-yyat Dawah, was killed in Bwebajja on Entebbe Road by unknown armed thugs on December 28. The raid On Wednesday, police raided Masjid Noor on William Street in Kampala on the directive of Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura to reinstate the old leadership headed by Sheikh Jjemba, but the Sheikh Kamoga sect resisted the takeover. Police have blamed the killings of Muslim leaders on the Allied Democratic Forces rebels based mainly in eastern DR Congo. But other sources attribute the murders to long-running wrangles between rival Muslim factions over property and leadership. Five Muslim clerics have been killed in similar circumstances.
